Mass Luciano (MASS) has consistently remained stable over the last two years not allowing any distractions from their core vision. This Hong Kong-based brand is sure to make traction in the U.S. in no time.
Happy two year anniversary! How does that feel?
Thank you, it feels great! My partner and I started the brand as a way to collaborate creatively two years ago, and it’s very satisfying to see it grow each season.
What have you learned over the past two years?
We’ve learned how to listen and filter other people’s comments, suggestions and advise. Everybody has an opinion on what we should design and how we should do certain things, but at the end of the day, it needs to feel right and fit in with our vision. We love creating statement pieces that are casual without being dressed down. Each style has a visual impact and stands out with a graphic sensibility that’s structured and enhances the male form. Our customers keep asking for more, and we enjoy hearing from them.
Who is your client?
The MASS man is confident, bold and has a young attitude – he’s always effortlessly dressed and isn’t afraid to stand out.
Have you been a designer most of your life?
Yes – I studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles over 16 years ago and started work at Guess Jeans straight after. I’ve had the opportunity to work with companies in Los Angeles, Italy and Hong Kong designing womenswear, menswear and even for kids. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.
Where do you get inspiration when preparing for a collection?
From architecture and sports. I’m fascinated with structure and form, function and practicality… architecture and sports have that in common.
Where did you grow up?
I’m an Army brat, so my family moved a lot when I was a kid. My best memories were growing up in Fort Hood, Texas, and Nuremberg, Germany. We moved to Puerto Rico when I was 12 and I went to high school and college there before moving to Los Angeles. Now I live in Hong Kong and have called it home for the last five or 6 years.
Explain how your MASS for Lane Crawford collection came into existence.
We entered Lane Crawford’s ‘The Next New 2016’ competition and won best new menswear brand. Up until that moment, our styles were only available online on our website. We designed an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford allowing our customers to enjoy a luxury retail experience. It’s been a great opportunity, and we’ve just finished our second collection for them.
Being based in Hong Kong, do you find it challenging to tap into the U.S. market?
A considerable part of our business comes from the USA. We sell the collection online, and since online has no borders, geography hasn’t been a problem for us. Our customer base is very international. We have orders that come from all over the globe – from the USA, the UK, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Dubai, Australia, China. It is very international. Plus we provide free shipping on all orders and have a hassle free returns and exchange policy which makes shopping with us pretty easy.
Do you have plans to grow your retail distribution in the U.S.?
Yes! We’re currently stocked at Universal Body in Los Angeles and are looking to expand to New York and Miami in 2018.
What do you know now that you wish you knew two years ago?
First of all, say goodbye to a traditional Monday to Friday 9 to 5 work schedule. That’s the first thing to go out the window. Your personal and work life are continually overlapping as there is always something that needs to get done, or drawn up, or posted. It can be hard to separate the two, especially in the early days when you are setting up, but you need to make sure your private life does not suffer. Also, because we’re a small company, you have to be prepared to do things that usually would not be within your scope or remit and learn new things quickly.
Finally, and most importantly, don’t sweat the little things – remember that everything happens for a reason.
Favourite Quote?
“When you don’t dress like everybody else, you don’t have to think like everybody else.” – Iris Apfel

]]>The post N°21 FW 2018 Collection: Comfortable and Classic appeared first on OBVIOUS Magazine.
]]>N°21 presented a wearable, classic collection during Men’s Fashion Week in Milano. Comfortability was a focal point throughout the runway show and a lot of the looks can be worn as separates.
Today’s fashion conscious men love designers who give them the option to mix and match pieces to cater to their unique personal style. The subtle pops of color, large plaid, and warm hues kept the balance throughout the entire collection. The consistency was spot on.
N°21 FW 2018 collection will be a favorite amongst millennials this coming fall.
When: Monday, January 15th, 2018
Time: 10.00 AM CET
Where: Garage Ventuno – Via Archimede, 26

]]>The post Ask A Designer featuring Vara Ayanna at MARAUDER$ World Wide appeared first on OBVIOUS Magazine.
]]>
Unapologetic fashion designer Vara Ayanna talks how being raised in Phoenix helped her change the narrative of being a super-lit fashion designer.
Where are you based? I’m based in Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ (Born and raised Phxgirl 4 life.)
Tell us about your upbringing and how it influenced your style? My upbringing was very Afro-centric, art-based and Church-based. My Mother is an artist and my Father is a Laser Engineer – both of my parents were heavily involved in church when I was younger. I grew up very encouraged to express myself and have my own views, despite being so engrossed in the Black church culture because my mother is an artist. Also, my grandmother is a seamstress so I’ve been sewing, designing and making art since the age of about 4. My whole family is artistic.
I even have a little flower pot I handpainted when I was 5. It has ‘Four things you want to be when you grow up’. I put fashion designer on it (HAHA). As far as this influencing my style – I think it made me rebel a lot of my life. I naturally have a rebellious nature so I really want to give that, “I don’t give a f*** (for mom LOL) what you think about me” attitude about my clothing in my own way.
Growing up Black in Arizona definitely influenced my style. I think it really made me see the world in a different way. Being the only Black kid in your class until like 6th grade is super trippy. I lived on the same street all of my baby years so my siblings and I ( I’m the second oldest of 4 Kids. ) got a different view of the world I believe. My parents and grandparents are all from the east coast so that has added to the influence of being
Black, a woman from Arizona and have a whole family of artist all from New York and North Carolina.
One of my biggest influences is music. Music to me changes the world and how we see it. Music influences my clothing more than anything. I love every type of music even country (SOME LOL). My favorite band is My Chemical Romance. I can def sing any part of most any album (haha). I’m influenced by Hip-hop culture & Black culture, as far as favorite Hip-hop artist. I feel like I cannot comment on all of them but I definitely have a lot of artists that I respect, rep and love their music in the Industry. Hip-hop controls the world and everything is influenced by it. That should tell you how much I love anything trap, anything Hip-hop. I’m also influenced by food, traveling, cultures, art, and many other things. I love fashion. I love style and designing.
You’re a pretty dope Fashion Stylist. Why did you feel the need to start a fashion line?Starting my brand was something I’ve always wanted to do. Yes, I am a stylist but I loved designing and always have. I love designing masculine cut clothing and styling as well. I think me becoming a stylist came naturally after I began designing heavily at the age of 15. I remember just loving everything about fashion, playing with scenarios and looks. Organizing my shoots and shows myself helped me become a stylist as well.
Describe your brand in 3 words. Marauders in three words – Super-Lit, Flossy-4-life, Too-Dope LOL!
Who is your customer? My customer is definitely creative. I feel like creatives, artists, music heads; the people who are into how they look and don’t care about pushing the envelope on what they wear. My customer has always been the individuals and elite creative types.
Dream celebrity you would love to see rocking MARAUDER$ World Wide? My dream Celebs to rock Marauders – Obama and Michelle; Bey & Jay, Kanye & Kim, Anna Wintour, Cardi B., Iris Apfel, Kendrick Lamar, Migos, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and more.
What do you know now that you wish you knew before you started your collection? I wish I knew how much money, time, and effort I would have had to put into my brands to get them exactly the way I wanted. Fashion is hard. Designing is hard. Being young and chasing your dreams while not knowing what’s going to happen next is hard. I know that it’s all worth it when you get to focus on your art and thrive in the fashion world. I’m very appreciative of the opportunities I have had the pleasure of having so far.
Pumpkin Pie or Sweet Potato Pie? PUMPKIN!
Vodka or Hennessy? Henny
Any shoutouts? Glory to God, honor to my family, my parents, grandparents and my sibs, Shout out to all friends and to everyone who has supported my efforts thus far.

In this time of struggling retail Flying Solo has created a model that is more than a clothing store – it’s a proven successful new “retail” business model where a diverse community of fashion designers have banded together to launch revolutionary retail experience that is better for both designers and customers.
Coming into year two, Flying Solo’s taken their idea from a 2500 square foot storefront to a massive 7000 square foot West Broadway flagship in prime SOHO real estate. Fueled and operated by 60+ designer members, Flying Solo provides a supportive structure that includes their retail store a huge pool of stylists, press and buyers, marketing budget, manufacturing resources, and work/office space. The retail experience is a delight for the customer who gets to personally interact and connect with new designers under one roof. Each season culminates with an NYFW runway presentation that not only gives the designers an opportunity to reach a bigger audience, but is a celebration of how FLYING SOLO’s business model allows for independence, profitability, and growth.
